September 16, 2003

Clarkston, Joel Rodney

August 28, 1954 - September 16, 2003

Joel passed away suddenly on September 16, 2003, doing what he loved. Joel is survived by his wife Mary, daughters Bridgette and Meghan, sons Joel Jr. and Nicholas, all of Comox, BC, his sister Lorraine of Atlin, BC, and his mother Hilda of Smithers, BC.

Much loved by his family, Joel also earned great respect and admiration from all those whose paths he crossed. A passionate pilot, he rose to the rank of major in the Canadian Armed Forces and culminated his military career as Labrador Flight Commander with 442 Search and Rescue Squadron at CFB Comox. In keeping with his life’s calling, Joel served as curator of the Comox Air Force Museum, and was a driving force behind the Spitfire restoration project. With a desire to act in the public service, Joel also served as director of Comox Valley Regional District Area B from 1997 to 1999. He will be sorely missed by all those who were touched by his humour, intelligence, and drive to serve his community.

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 22nd at the CFB Comox Protestant Chapel. The Clarkston family invites Joel’s friends and associates to a celebration of his life, to be held immediately after the service at the 880 Wing building adjacent to the Comox Airport.
