Mary Joan Florence Christina Irvine/Mac David

Compassionate Mother and Friend to all

June 26, 1934

~ September 13, 2007

It is with great sadness and joy that we mourn the passing of our beloved ‘Joan’.

Born in Campbellton, New Brunswick June 26, 1934. Surrounded by the warm hearts of family and friends Joan died peacefully and courageously on September 13, 2007. Widow of Fenwick Jackson Irvine, she is survived by her loving partner Dan Bentley, his son Blair, her sister Karen and husband Ron Poole, brother Harry and partner Val, sister Helen (deceased), her children: Holly (Tom), Joanne (Bill) and Michael (Katherine), her grandchildren: Kristen, Jason , Nathan, Lindsay, Doug, Janis, Valerie, and two great-grandchildren: Brendan and Taylor.

Joan was a compassionate and caring mother, friend and soulmate to many and she touched the lives of everyone she met. Joan had many hobbies and interests including art, poetry, gardening, and her beloved Jazz community. But what distinguished Joan was the incredible caring and heartfelt friendship she offered to so many. She seemed to bloom here in this wondrous Valley surrounded by her great love, the ocean.

Joan was a cornucopia of giving, an endless flow of energy, a help… and loving expression to friends, family and those in need that only seemed to grow in her transition. Thoughtful to the end she had the extraordinary ability to know who was in need and to offer the fullest capacity of herself. Special friendships, masterful cooking/catering, Jazz trips, dancing, walks by the ocean, delicious bowls of ice cream, old westerns, dressing up and celebrating, special time with family and her great friendship with Holly, these marked the days of her life. And though she will be greatly missed we each can feel a part of her within us now. And if you make your way to the spit, on a clear night you will see that there is a new star in the night sky, the ocean seems brighter and the blackberries are juicier. Joan, we will miss your wonderful presence and may our blessings and prayers support you in your new journey into light and new life.

Heartfelt thank yous to Dr. Potter Cogan and Dr. Williams for their hopeful and dedicated professional care, to Dr. Kind for his warmth, empathy and spiritual kindness, to Nurse Ruth for her great friendship, care giving and loving support, to Pastor Dave and Gordon Carter for their prayer, compassion and loving attention, and to the sensitive support and care of the St. Joseph’s nurses and staff. God bless you all!

Joan requested that donations be made to either the Canadian Cancer Society (Breast Cancer) or to Dr. Kind for persons who need additional financial support. A donation box will be present at the ceremony. Please note Joan’s name on your donations.

Please join us in a celebration of Joan’s life to be held at Comox Pentecostal Church, 1919 Guthrie, Comox at 1 pm. Friday, September 21st, 2007.
