John (Jack)
1924 - 2008
Passed away on July 21, 2008 at Queen's Park Hospital, New Westminster, B.C. Jack was born on September 11, 1924 in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England. in 1926 the family moved from England to Canada and settled in Dove Creek. Jack was predeceased by his parents William (1944) and Sarah (1990), brother Bill Porritt (1997), sisters Kathleen Holt (1983), Edith Carwithen (1988), Mary Matthew/Agar (2000), Margaret Patterson (2005), Betty Jorgensen (1967), niece Janet Jorgensen (1967) and four nephews William and Donald Jorgensen (1967), Douglas Walker (1979), Richard Holt (1999).
He is lovingly survived by his sister Irene Walker, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. He lived with his sister Irene for many years and had a very special relationship with nephew Bruce and niece Sherry (husband Lyn) and their son Dan who called him Poppa. Uncle Jack was always keen to find out how everyone was doing in the family, keeping up with everything that they did. He particularly enjoyed making lumberjack style pancake breakfasts for everyone; there was always more on your plate than you could eat.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and reading local history books. He could always put a smile on the face of anyone through his generosity and kind gestures.
Jack was enlisted in the Canadian Armed Force during World War II. Jack worked in the logging industry for most of his career, mainly as a Boom man (Captain Porritt), logging up and down the B.C. coast and on the Queen Charlotte Islands until he retired in 1986. A gathering of family and friends to honor Jack Porritt will be held at the Dove Creek Community Hall on August 4th at 12:30 pm.
