Shepherd op-ed nothing more than an attack ad on NDP

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

I am writing to protest the attack ad you allowed to be printed in your April 20 edition. It was called a “guest column.” The headline (British Columbia should be concerned about the NDP’s Leap Manifesto) is very misleading, stating incorrectly that the Leap Manifesto is the NDPs. The NDP passed a motion at their last convention to discuss the Leap Manifesto. It has not been adopted federally or provincially. Horgan has never endorsed it or its calls for a ban on new resource-extraction projects and an expedited transition to renewable energy, saying that it doesn’t reflect the values of British Columbia. The manifesto was released by author Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis last year before the federal NDP convention.

Calling this corporate lobby a “citizens group” is really a stretch.

Former Christy Clark advisor and Canfor CEO, Jim Shepherd, heads up ‘Concerned Citizens for BC.’

They have a large slush fund to try to influence our provincial election. They do not represent the citizens of BC.

These attack ads speak volumes about the depths to which the corporate crowd will go to keep the BC Liberals in office.

The Leap Manifesto is a serious challenge to our status quo dependence on fossil fuels and the looming threat of global warming. It deserves our serious consideration. It is not a hammer to hit the BC NDP with.
