Lawn bowls roll in $2,350 for KidSport

The Lupine Art & Friends Charity Lawn Bowling Day last weekend was a hit, as 56 newbies enjoyed the sunshine and music to raise funds for KidSport Comox Valley. Various prizes from 16 businesses were awarded in player voted categories like ‘best dress’, which the Brick House Betties roller derby team won handily. No one knew how to play when they walked through the gates, but with a five-minute crash course, they were rolling not ball, but ‘bowls’.

“Anyone can get to a skill level to be competitive with most club members. It’s a great sport to enjoy recreationally as the time commitment ranges from playing a quick 45-minute game to full week-long tournaments,” event organizer Derek Kaufman said.

Memberships are $115/year with access to the club and countless events at varying levels from club to district to provincial. More information can be found at www.courtenaylbc.com or by calling 250-338-8222.

Jana Letain, KidSport CV’s executive director, said the event was unique in that KidSport volunteers integrated into the tournament.

“We loved adding a few of our volunteers to the tournament to mingle with the donors. One of our volunteers even bought a membership! We really appreciate everyone’s generosity, and the $2,350 raised is the equivalent of funding 18 children to play soccer for a season,” Jana said.

KidSport CV funds under-privileged children the costs to play a variety of sports, with the most popular being hockey and soccer. All proceeds raised stay in the Comox Valley.

“With all of the exposure of this fundraiser, we’ve received some online donations which come directly to our Comox Valley chapter and stay here in the Valley,” Letain said.
