A couple of Vancouver Island teams won championships at the ninth edition of the World Masters Games in New Zealand.

On Sunday, the 55-plus Islanders soccer team defeated a fellow Canadian team, the Okanagan Kickers, 2-0 in the gold medal match. Comox Valley residents Andy Marinus, Ron Quilter and Alan Fletcher played on the squad. There were seven teams in their division.

The Loss of Gravity ladies fastball team also won gold by defeating PEI 11-4 in the final of the 45-plus recreational division. Valley residents on the team included Arlene Vogel, Michel Haider, Bobbi Turchenek, Debbie English, Tammy Ellison, Rosie Chrest, Jen Royer, Paula Ives and Marla Milburn-Bates.

The ladies were undefeated in eight games. There were 24 teams in the division.
