The 26-year-old Highland Secondary grad qualified for the PGA Tour event after a strong showing at a qualifier at Heron Point Golf Links in Alberton, Ont. — during a break from the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada.

Wheeldon had also played at the 2013 Canadian Open.

American golfer Martin Flores led the pack Friday at 12 under, one stroke better than fellow American Matt Every and Gary Woodland.
